Description
Each tablet contains Elemental Calcium 300 mg (as Calcium Carbonate 750 mg) and Vitamin D3 60 I.U.
Calcium with Vitamin D is a combination product which consists of Vitamin D3 and elemental calcium. It is commonly used as a dietary supplement where calcium intake may be inadequate such as in childhood and adolescence, in pregnancy and lactation, postmenopausal women and the elderly.
Action
Pharmacology: (Summary of Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacokinetics): Calcium is essential for the functional integrity of the nervous, muscular and skeletal systems. Healthy adults on normal diets do not need oral calcium supplement. However, these may be needed in lactating and pregnant women, and in patients with osteomalacia, rickets and hypocalcemia secondary to hypoparathyroidism or vitamin D deficiency.
Vitamin D3 is essential for promoting the absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphate and for normal calcification of bone. It maintains normal concentration of calcium and phosphate in the plasma by facilitating their absorption from the small intestine, enhancing their mobilization from bone and decreasing their excretion by the kidney.
Approximately one-fifth to one-third of orally administered calcium is absorbed in the small intestine, depending on the presence of vitamin D metabolites, pH lumen, and on dietary factors such as calcium binding to fibers or phytates. Calcium absorption is increased when a calcium deficiency is present or when a patients is on low calcium diet. In patients with achlorhydria of hypochlorhydria, calcium absorption, especially in the carbonate salt, may be reduced.
Vitamin D is absorbed from the renal intestine. Absorption is reduced in impaired hepatic or biliary function. Before vitamin can exert its physiological action it is converted to one or more of its metabolites. Excretion of vitamin D and its metabolites is mainly in the bile and only small amounts are eliminated in the urine.
Indications/Uses
As a dietary supplement.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 tablet to be chewed 3-4 times daily.
Overdosage
Symptoms and Treatment for Overdosage, and Antidote: Anorexia, lassitude, nausea, vomiting, polyuria, profuse sweating, headache and extreme thirst. Hypercalcemia may result in calcium deposits in many tissues, such as the arteries and kidneys, which lead to hypotension and renal failure. If symptoms arise discontinue administration of Calcium with Vitamin D and give large quantities of fluid and electrolytes. The patients should be placed on a low calcium diet. Cortisone rapidly reduces hypercalcemia in severe conditions.
Contraindications
Hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria; severe renal disease; calcium loss due to immobilization, if renal calculi are suspected.
Special Precautions
Dietary and other sources of vitamin D should be evaluated to avoid excessive intake.
Should be given with care to patients with impaired renal function.
The following laboratory test and/or values may be modified during the use of the drug; serum calcium and serum gastrin concentration may increase; systemic and urinary pH may increase; serum phosphatase concentration may decrease.
Oxalic acid-containing food such as rhubarb and spinach, and phytic acid-containing food, such as bran and whole grain cereals, should be avoided since concurrent use may inhibit calcium absorption.
Pregnancy and lactation: Calcium with Vitamin D should be used with caution during pregnancy and lactation, as excessive doses may give rise to hypercalcemia in the offspring.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Calcium with Vitamin D should be used with caution during pregnancy and lactation, as excessive doses may give rise to hypercalcemia in the offspring.
Adverse Reactions
Calcium with Vitamin D is generally well tolerated, the side effects which have been noted are rare, consisting of anorexia, nausea, vomiting, headache, and weakness.
Drug Interactions
Calcium salt are incompatible with oxidising agents, citrates, soluble carbonates, bicarbonates, phosphates, tartrates and sulphates. Calcium reduced absorption of tetracycline. It will increase risk of hypercalcaemia with thiazides.
Storage
Keep in a tight container. Store at temperature below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture.
Shelf-Life: 3 years from the date of manufacture.
